Tammy Layman Hall

Short Bio

Tammy Layman Hall is a freelance writer, instructional designer, and workshop facilitator in Southwestern Michigan. She lives on the shores of Lake Michigan in the old village dance hall with her family and very opinionated pets. She is married to the reigning neighborhood Christmas light champion. When she is not busy writing, you can find her walking at her local parks, neck-deep in yet another DIY project, and picking tomatoes off her sandwiches.

As a child, Tammy read every book in her two-room school classroom library - twice! As a learning and development professional, Tammy experienced the power of storytelling in corporate and higher education settings.  As an instructional designer, she leveraged the power of story to build critical thinking, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. As a workshop facilitator, she used stories to build community, build empathy, and educate participants. As a mother, she relied on stories to connect her children to their roots and show what's possible. Today, Tammy writes books that spark curiosity.

Tammy is seeking representation.

Longer Bio

Tammy Layman Hall writes for people who teach kids - whether they are K-12 educators, Higher Ed faculty, Corporate Training departments, parents, grandparents, or caregivers. When she isn't researching, writing, pitching book ideas, or facilitating training workshops, Tammy supports the arts through her volunteer roles with the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) as Regional Registrar for Michigan.

Today, Tammy is a full-time freelance writer. She began her career as a technical writer (after completing her BA in English from Grand Valley State University), writing work instructions, policy manuals, and new hire training materials. Shortly after landing her first 'real job,' Tammy realized she missed writing her stories. Luckily, she found Story Spinners of Grand Rapids. She has told stories as part of Tellebration!, museum exhibits, and nature center events. Soon, Tammy was collecting stories for babysitting gigs, festival performances, and training workshops (while completing her Master of Management at Aquinas College). Tammy has held lots of other jobs. She was a car hop at one of the last drive-up restaurants, training facilitator, instructional designer, 8-D team leader, preschool aide, librarian assistant, e-learning course developer, grant writer, magician's assistant, and recipe tester. Her stories have been published in magazines, including Highlights High Five.

As a volunteer, Tammy writes newsletters, grants, and sign-up sheets for her kids' band and orchestra parents organization, her church's youth group, and her son's FIRST Robotics team. She can also be found pitching in to help clean up her local Lake Michigan beach.

Tammy enjoys walking in the woods, being out on the water, trying new recipes, and enjoying her family and friends.

Tammy believes stories facilitate learning.  Her mission is to write a good tale, help others tell good stories, and show people the possibilities they may not see for themselves.
